Community Meeting in Cleveland, MS

June 17, 2023

Last Saturday, June 17 we held our community meeting in Cleveland, MS with the support of the promotoras living nearby. We’d like to thank the Catholic Church Our Lady of Victories in Cleveland, MS for allowing us to use their facilities for this community meeting. We’d also like to thank our companions, Angelica and Mayra for managing and helping carry out the program successfully. Other fellow promotoras such as Marina from Jackson and Manuela from Canton, as well as the assistants of promotoras, Maria, Marimar, and Kelly supported the activity. The activity focused on an educational intervention for chronic diseases, particularly high blood pressure in adults. As younger attendants left home, we used the opportunity to make an introductory educational intervention on sexual and reproductive health.

Later we enjoyed a healthy meal prepared by our fellow promotoras and pizza for the youngest. We distributed our second newsletter, covering some areas of the Delta and recent events in Rolling Fork.

End of the First Period, Celebration, and Recognition Event for Mothers, Promotoras, and Staff

May 6, 2023

On May 6 we hosted our closing event regarding the topic of Diabetes Mellitus and got to celebrate Mother’s Day. We began our event by continuing our conversation about hypertension. Similar to previous events, participants signed an informed consent form to engage in the activities. We took advantage of our time together to also celebrate the mothers who are also health promotoras. Many of them expressed never having been part of a celebration that honored them or their work as mothers and active community members.

Dani delighted us with a melody on the piano, and Maria and Kelly shared a few words dedicated to their mothers for that special day. We hosted some games for children as well, which they got to enjoy in the company of their mothers. Towards the end of the event, mothers were gifted a relaxation gift to pamper themselves at home.

Community Event in Canton, MS
April 1, 2023
Event was held in the city of Canton, with the facilities provided by Grace Episcopal Church, particularly to the Reverend Beth Foose and Mr. Cecil Fox.

The Health Topic Covered: Diabetes Mellitus/First Aid

At this event the promotoras, especially our colleagues from Canton: Gregoria and Manuela and the support of the promoters of Jackson Mirna and Marina together with the assistants promotoras, Kelly, Maria, and Allison took center stage. From arranging permits for the facilitation of the place, as well as the invitations, and the preparation of the food that we shared with the community, the other promotoras of other communities were a tremendous support for the realization of the event. They were present performing pressure checks with the community, caring for the children, and distributing food.

There the promotoras showed their community what they learned regarding pressure checks and first aid by performing it live and inviting the community to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation themselves.

We also enjoyed a break in which the promotoras of Carthage and Manuela prepared a typical dance from their home country and in turn shared ancestral knowledge of the use of plants for medicinal purposes.

We enjoyed and shared a delicious salad prepared by the Canton promotoras, and other healthy foods and snacks for the little ones.

We distributed diapers, antibacterial gel, and our first newsletter with the entire community and in their language.

We ended the event proud of everything we had learned and for having shared those moments with the promotoras. We promised to continue with these type of events as periodically as possible.

We launched our first community contest with the theme: "Health for All"

Diabetes Mellitus Intervention
November 19, 2022

Start of the first 3 months of the intervention topic on diabetes mellitus. We join the international campaign in the prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus. We started  with an educational talk showing the situation of type 2 diabetes mellitus from a global vision to the current situation in Mississippi.

A demonstration of healthy foods, analysis of a balanced diet and the technique for the 3x1 dish. We shared healthy food and participated in signing the informed consent for voluntary participation in the three-month educational intervention. Everyone knew their weight and height before starting the 3-month program.

Having a pleasant time with quality information and above all learning how to prevent disease and eat healthily. At the end, a small trivia was played and each of our promotoras was given an airfryer next to a healthy food pantry, as an alternative to introduce in our kitchens and prepare food in a healthier way.

CPR Training in Gulfport, MS

Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September, 2022

Training is carried out on the Coast on first aid and CPR in different situations, lead by IAJE and Yudenia in relation to Health.

The promotoras, assistants of the promotoras (a total of 15 promotoras and 3 promotoras assistants) and staff of the Staff received this training. All the promotoras in the training received a package with the tools that allow them to replicate what they learned within their communities. In the training packages delivered, IAJE included: A pulse oximeter, digital thermometer, stethoscope, digital blood pressure check device, and a mannequin to practice CPR maneuvers, as well as uniforms. The promotoras practiced cardiopulmonary resuscitation with the models, learned to do pressure checks, and recognized different action protocols for different emergencies.

The training took place on the coast of Mississippi, an environment that attracted not only the promotoras but their families as well.  Both the setting for the training, the personalized massage given by a therapist who moved from Jackson, MS, the beach and the chance to include their families, were received as a gift by the promoters. A delicious dinner was provided before retuning home and the opportunity to say goodbye via breathing exercises, meditation, and reflection on the shore of the beach. Great steps to say goodbye and begin the return to Jackson.
